Western Blotting

Novel proteins or those that do not have validated assays are best measured using traditional western blotting. The APL is equipped with gel electrophoresis power supplies (BioRad x5), vertical gel electrophorsis boxes (BioRad x 5), and an rapid transfer device (BioRad Turbo Blot). Gels are imaged using a BioRad ChemiDoc MP Molecular Imager. This system allows for multiplexing with up to 3 protein targets and an internal control. Researchers in the APL routinely use western blotting on venous blood and tissue lysates to measure not only protein concentration, but also phosphorylation (activation) state.
